Our practice believes in the importance of wearing a mouthguard when participating in sports. For a small fee, much expense in restorative treatment can be avoided, not to mention the pain and suffering from a cut lip or a broken jaw.
There are three main types of mouthguards. The least expensive is a ready made mouthguard that can be purchased at a local sporting goods store. One device fits everyone and unfortunately, not everyone is the same. But, these work when cost is a factor and when one is in a pinch. The second type is placed in boiling water and cut and adapted to fit the individual mouth. These work better and are a little more expensive. Then there is the mouthguard that is made from a set of impressions taken in the dental office. These come in an assortment of colors and styles and offer maximum protection to the teeth, lips and bone support.
Many factors, such as age of the person wearing the mouthguard, the presence of primary teeth in the mouth, to the sport being played, come into play in deciding which mouthguard is best. Our staff are well trained in mouthguards and will be glad to help in which guard is best for you or your child.
